On the evening of 14 August, the Riga Central Market welcomes all local and out-of-town visitors to watch the new documentary about the Riga Central Market as part of the Riga City Festival. Before the showing of the film, visitors will have the opportunity to enjoy the experimental meditative music performance by Rihards Lībietis Orchestra.
Anatolijs Abramovs, Chairman of the Board of Riga Municipality JSC Riga Central Market, points out: “The new documentary is a bright and colourful story of the Central Market, the people of Latvia, traditions and flavours. I am pleased to invite every seller and shopper at the Central Market to take this opportunity and watch the new film even before it premieres on TV in autumn, and enjoy the authentic market ambiance at the same time. Perhaps this will give you the inspiration to search for new tastes and you will find your trusted seller.”
The documentary Riga Central Market has been created as part of the second season of the film cycle Food Markets: In the Belly of the City about the five interesting and unique European markets – in Zagreb, Freiburg, Toulouse, Florence and Riga. Filming took place throughout 2014, reflecting the four seasons. The documentary provides a fascinating insight into the unique ensemble of the Central Market and presents viewers with the foods typical of Latvian cuisine, but rarely to be found elsewhere, such as lamprey, countryside bread made in maple leaves with a fermentation starter, birch sap, herbal teas, traditional cottage cheese and curd. The characters of the film are the chefs Mārtiņš Sirmais, Kārlis Celms and Jānis Melnalksnis who are well known in Latvia, as well as the owner of Ādaži Sausage Making Shop and seller at the Central Market Jānis Sauka, the healer and herbal tea seller Tatjana Bērziņa, the editor-in-chief of the magazine Četras sezonas (Four Seasons) and author of several cookbooks Signe Meirāne and other interesting people.
The making of the film brought together the creative teams from the Latvian production company VFS Films, the Italian film studio STEFILM, as well as the Franco-German cultural television channel ARTE. The producer Uldis Cekulis managed to implement this project thanks to the funding provided by international partners, as well as a significant financial contribution from LIVE Riga, the Secretariat of the Latvian Presidency of the Council of the European Union and the Latvian Tourism Development Agency.
The film will premiere on Nēģu Square of the Central Market at 8:55 PM, but before that the visitors will have a chance to get to know the film making team and its main characters.
The event will be opened with a concert by Rihards Lībietis Orchestra, where the audience will be able to indulge in the tunes of the new original tracks from the forthcoming album Scream, Breathe, Cry. Alongside the virtuoso guitar playing by Rihards Lībietis, the musical works of the band are permeated with the sounds of the piano, saxophone, violin, flute, drums, percussion and cello.
