On 18 June 2014 at 5 PM, the Vegetable Pavilion of the Central Market will hold the unveiling of the photography exhibition City within the City. The exhibition will feature works by the photographers Reinis Hofmanis, Jānis Saliņš and Māris Morkāns. Their pieces of photographic art, which offer a special view on the developments in the Central Market and its atmosphere, convey the overall impression that the Central Market is a city within the city and further reinforce this argument.

“The impressions of visitors to the Riga Central Market accumulated over a large number of years have confirmed the argument that the Central Market in the heart of Riga is a unique place where life runs its own course. Different people meet here, each with their own story and communication style. This phenomenon has been skilfully embedded in the photographers’ works, providing a different take and vision of the place. It is gratifying that in addition to buying and selling opportunities, the Riga Central Market makes a great venue for a variety of cultural activities. The Art Days that were held earlier this year and the photo exhibition that is to take place now are a continuation of the extensive discovery activities within RIGA 2014 project which reveal the Central Market as a place of inspiration for people of Riga, Latvia and the whole world,” Anatolijs Abramovs, Chairman of the Board of Riga Municipality JSC Riga Central Market, points out.

The series of photographs by Reinis Hofmanis in the exhibition City within the City consists of portraits of people encountered in the market and elements characterizing the market environment. The angles found in market reflect the understanding of the nicely distinctive occupancy of premises and diverse opportunities for their transformation.

The Riga Central Market is an integral part of Riga skyline and it is very attractive mainly due to the fact that it functions on its own, piecing together life stories, weekdays, holidays and imprints of the eras. The series of photographs by Jānis Saliņš highlights the diverse forms of expression, emphasizing the historic aura and the urban architectural ensemble.

Māris Morkāns has given a rather witty name to his series of photographs for the exhibition City within the City, which is: There, What a Piece of Work! His goal is to show the daily life of both the ordinary people and those known in society and the relationship with the surrounding reality, with particular emphasis on the mood and emotional background. Capturing the emotions is the main feature of Māris Morkāns’ photo shooting style. The Riga Central Market is associated with the crowds, yet there are distinctive personalities among sellers and buyers who stand out. Māris Morkāns has made a great effort recording the emotions of the moment relative to the overall market mood, showing that the Central Market is a miniature model of this country.

The exhibition will be on view until 18 August 2014.

See you in the most colourful place in the city – the Riga Central Market!
