On Saturday, 20 June, Riga Central Market welcomes everyone to join in the Midsummer Celebrations – Līgo and Jāņi. Those who visit the Central Market on this day will have the opportunity to enjoy the festive concert, feel the magic of the summer solstice and rediscover the ancient traditions of wreath making, folk song singing and holiday bonfire making.
Everyone is invited to Nēģu Square from 11 AM to 2 PM where we will welcome Midsummer – Līgo and Jāņi. The event will be hosted by the famous folklorists Iveta and Vidvuds Medeņi. Together with them, we will make the festive bonfire and participate in various solstice rituals. The hosts will not only perform Latvian folk songs, but also explain their meaning and the best time for singing during the solstice celebration.
“The Riga Central Market is a unique place in the centre of the capital city, where we feel the extremely vibrant rhythm of nature. The variety of seasonal vegetables, fruit, berries and mushrooms signals the developments in the nature just like a calendar. The Midsummer Celebrations will be devoted not only to the summer solstice, but also to the awaited harvest season when the Riga Central Market will abound in the delicious fruits of labour of farmers, mushroom gatherers and berry pickers from all over Latvia. This will be a true joy for us and the buyers,” Anatolijs Abramovs, Chairman of the Board of Riga Municipality JSC Riga Central Market, explains.
The folk dance groups Dzērve and Zalktis will entertain the audience with their performances, while the musical atmosphere will be created by the children’s vocal groups Saulessvece and Dvīņi.
The ornaments workshop will offer everyone the opportunity to make their own garlands from Midsummer herbs. Visitors will have a chance to taste different teas, grown and harvested here in Latvia.
At the same time, everyone will be able to purchase some beautiful hand-made crafts from Latvian craftsmen and artisans at the Midsummer Fair and the Seniors’ Charity Fair. Both the Seniors’ Charity Fair and the Midsummer Fair will be held for three pre-holiday days – 19, 20 and 21 June.
Throughout the Midsummer Celebrations, the children will enjoy the company of the mascots of the Riga Central Market – Baggie and Little Basket. All activities during the event will be free of charge.
Enjoy your pre-holiday shopping and let your table be filled with rich, healthy and delicious food.
