At 11:00 a.m. on July 29th, 2016 an exhibition “The Central Market. Deeply rooted” will be launched at the vegetables pavilion of Riga Central Market.

One will be able to see the historic photographic data acquired from the collection of the Museum of the History of Riga and Navigation, as well as the photos of the modern market life through the eyes of the photographer Janis Silins (Jānis Siliņš), allowing to notice and appreciate the changes that have taken place within several decades in the market and its surrounding.

“Different currencies changed since the opening of the Central Market, its name has been changed, but from generation to generation the Central Market has taken root in the customs and consciousness of Rigans as a bright and ever active place in the heart of the capital, where farmers and traders meet their buyers daily. More and more the architecture and extraordinary ambience of the Central Market is enjoyed by the foreign travelers. Approaching the centennial celebration of the Republic of Latvia, we offer you to visit the exhibition “The Central Market. Deeply rooted” and catch a glimpse of the changes that have taken place throughout the years. We have created an audio-guide specifically for this exhibition in Latvian, English and Russian that will provide the visitors with wider insight into the meandering paths of Riga Central Market,” says the member of the board of JSC “Riga Central Market” Andris Morozovs.

The exhibition preparation process proved once again that the untangling of the roots of Riga Central Market is full of exciting discoveries and interesting historic data. The construction of the market alone is noteworthy. The WWI German army aircraft – the zeppelin – hangars have transmogrified into five market pavilions, but the official opening of the Central Market has seen the presence of statesmen, members of the city administration and even the president of the time Alberts Kviesis with the First Lady, contrary to the old Daugavmala Market, where only the poor and the cooks of the rich made their purchases.

In order to provide the visitors with a wider insight in the history of the Central Market, the exposition of the most interesting historic facts will be given alongside the photographs. Besides, it will be possible to hear the historical information in one’s smartphone while watching the photos by using the audio-guide created specifically for this exhibition. The information will be provided in Latvian, English and Russian thus becoming accessible for both the locals and the foreign guests that year-by-year arrive in ever growing numbers to get to know the largest open-plan market in Europe.

The exhibition will be open in the vegetables pavilion until September 29, 2016.

See you in the most colourful place of the city – the Riga Central Market!
