Last Saturday, 28 October, in defiance of the typical autumn weather conditions, Riga Fish Festival took place for the first time on Nēģu Street Square at the Central Market. Riga Fish Festival 2017 is a unique project that has been initiated in cooperation with LIVE Rīga with an aim to promote the recognisability of the Latvian fishing and farming businesses and offer to the residents of the city and out-of-town visitors an informative entertainment programme packed with various activities, presenting the traditional and modern flavours of fish dishes.
During the festival, people flocked to taste the fish and seafood delicacies offered by Latvian producers, and among them there were not only regular visitors to the market, but also Artis Druvinieks, Chairman of the Board of the Riga Central Market, and Maksims Tolstojs, Member of the Board of LIVE Rīga and Chairman of the City Development Committee of the Riga City Council, as well as Afzal Artikov, Ambassador of the Republic of Uzbekistan in Latvia.
A.Druvinieks points out: “This is an excellent opportunity to highlight the role of fish dishes in Latvian cuisine, as well as to reveal the nuances of taste that are characteristic only of Latvia’s culture to the residents and guests of the city. I hope that this festival will become a tradition and will be eagerly looked forward to again”.
Riga Fish Festival gathered together several thousands of visitors. The performance by the popular music group Deficīts was great joy not only for young people, but also for those in their best years. The smallest participants of the festival could have fun in creative workshops and enjoy healthy snacks. The Central Market was bursting with a great atmosphere of dance, song, tasting, workshops, contests and lectures on healthy nutrition, which were all part of Riga Fish Festival.
